Joe Barresi employing this technique on distorted guitars. In the compression section of an SSL channel strip:

set the Attack switch to slow
set the Release to its fastest setting (0.1)
set the Threshold to its maximum (-20)
as the audio plays, start moving the Ratio knob up until you start to get the desired gain reduction
