All Night Sedans

One of my goals this year is to narrow down my list of songs that I play on piano and guitar to just 10 each. The point of the goal is to focus on really internalizing these songs, not only so that I have a solid pool to choose to play at any time, but also to be able to add some level of improvisation to every performance.

All Night Sedans is a great example of this. It’s a really simple IV-V-vi-I progression in the key of Ab, but there are so many ways to embellish every performance. The list of 9 videos below show Leif playing the same song with a number of variations:

  • loosely improvised intro
  • loosely improvised outro
  • a variety of passing chords (more on this in my next post)
  • using a looper to create an ambient texture to play on top of
  • playing on an acoustic piano
  • playing on a Wurlitzer
  • playing the bass line on a Rhodes Piano Bass
  • playing solo or with a band
